As a teenager, Kinoshita, who was born in Hamamatsu, in central Japan, ran away to Tokyo because his martinet father opposed his ambition to enter the film industry. ![]() Kurosawa's Judo Saga was a militaristic period piece, whereas Kinoshita's The Port Where Flowers Bloom was a light comedy about islanders who reform two confidence men, and establish a shipping company to help the war effort. They were Keisuke Kinoshita, who has died aged 86, and Akira Kurosawa, who died last September.īoth directed their first features in 1943, and the contrast between them was immediately apparent. Two film directors, near contemporaries, helped resurrect Japanese cinema from the devastation of the second world war.
